Halloween is just around the corner, and many of us are busy making plans to celebrate the spookiest time of the year. But if you’re not keen on trick-or-treating and horror films, what’s the alternative?

Hosting a Halloween party might seem like a lot of work, but with our guidance, you can organise a great Halloween-themed golf event stress-free.

What to wear
The possibilities are endless for Halloween golf costumes, and there’s something for everyone – whether you love to go all-out on your outfit or prefer to stick to a mask and a wig.

For an easy look, try an 80s golfer look – pair old-fashioned sun visors with a heritage tank top, matching shorts and classic knee-high socks. Alternatively, don a blonde wig and a red cap for a hilarious Donald Trump fancy dress.

Really want to get in the spirit of Halloween? Tattered clothes and plenty of face paint makes a great zombie golfer costume, while if you’re feeling extra creative, you can create a gory golf-ball wound by sticking the shell of half a golf ball on your forehead and surrounding it with lots of red paint.

Where to go
Look out for special events at clubs in your area – plenty host fancy dress parties and twilight golf with food and drink provided.

If you’d prefer to organise your own, there’s plenty of options. Host your own costume party at your local club, or head to a crazy golf course for a fun-filled game that’s even better when you’ve had a few drinks.

Alternatively, why not organise an evening of fancy-dress pub golf? Choosing either a 9- or 18-hole course, crawl the pubs in your area and try to finish your drinks in as few gulps as you can. Make it even more competitive by making scorecards – for each pub, set the type of drink and a par for the number of gulps, then head out with your friends for a night on the town.

What to play
If you’re organising an event at a local club, you’ll need a Halloween game to play. Made popular by California’s Haggin Oaks Golf Club, the Halloween Golf Party Game is simple to play and easy to set up.

Carve a design in the shell of a pumpkin and extend the opening of the mouth to the bottom. Place it on the ground and set three foul lines at different distances from the pumpkin, then challenge players to putt the ball in the mouth of the pumpkin from each line.

Those who make the putt at the closest foul line get a small sweet treat, those who succeed at the second get a larger one… and so on. It’s a great game for those who are still kids at heart: the sweet prizes are a fun throwback to your trick-or-treating days.
