A Tie in the Sun

Former PGA Cup player Robert Arnott, with a flawless 68, shared the spoils at a gloriously sunny Ladybank today with Sam Cairns, whose three-under score earned him the sponsors' commemorate glassware because of his better inward half of 33.

Playing in the Scottish qualifying round for the Glenmuir Club Professional Championship, Arnott, from Bishopbriggs Driving Range, had halves of 34, firing birdies at the opening two holes, and at the 391-yard last, where his eight-iron second shot finished six feet from the pin.

Cairns, representing Westerwood, Cumbernauld, made a welcome return to form, and, along with Arnott, now leads the 12 Scottish qualifiers to the 72-hole final at Prince's, near Sandwich in Kent next month.

"I've been blowing hot and cold since the season began", admitted Sam, "But I put it together today - even after a fat tee shot with my 2-iron at the opening hole, which cost me a bogey."

Cairns had four birdies on the front nine, spoiled by a double bogey at the 397-yard ninth, but his inward half was bogey-free, finishing with birdies at the 17th and 18th holes.

The highlight of Sam's round came at the 545-yard second hole where he was forced to hack out from trees, then hit his six-iron third shot 195 yards to 15 feet and holed for the first of six birdies.

The rewards for the top finishers at Prince's are attractive - the winner picks up £10,000 from a prize fund of £78,000, and almost guarantees himself a place in the 10-man PGA Cup team to visit the United States next year. He has the use of a top-of-the-range Peugeot for a year, the leading 10 finishers will be exempt from regional qualifying for The Open, and the top 20 are exempt from next year's Glenmuir regional qualifying
