Alex Hoping For Drama-Free Glenmuir Qualifier At Little Aston

Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship In Association With Peugeot & MPI Press Release

Alex Stockton hopes he won’t need to call on his powers of recovery to make his mark once more in this year’s Midland qualifier for the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship at Little Aston, on May 21.

Stockton won the event last year when he shot three-under-par to post an early marker which none of his rivals could better.

The Moor Hall player did it after a poor front nine - only to stage a comeback good enough to leave him top of the leaderboard.

And he admitted this will only be the third time he has played the Little Aston course - and this is first time he has been back since.

Stockton will aim to be among the qualifiers for the final which will be played over 72-holes at The Oxfordshire, from August 10-13 and is also supported by Peugeot and MPI Financial Services.

“Last year was only the second time I’d played Little Aston and I was in trouble at two over par at one point,” he said.

“I made five under on the back nine and really managed to pick it up. I was out early so I had to wait to see if that score was good enough and it was.

“But then we went to Dundonald in Scotland for the final and the weather was bad. I sort of enjoyed it in a way as it was a real test but I ended up missing the cut.

“I’ll also be playing the Welsh Open PGA Professional Championship qualifier the day before so it’s a big couple of days for me.”

Stockton remarked that he has been working hard on his game to make sure he stays sharp for tournaments.

He added: “My biggest problem is that I’ve been doing more teaching than playing.  In the past, I’ve been turning up for events not having practised enough and ended being a bit rusty.

“Now I’m making more of an effort to practice more in between events.

“I was pleased to get to the final last year and I’ll be trying to do the same again.”

Jason Powell, of Hinckley and the 2009 Welsh National champion, returns to Little Aston reflecting on a spell of good form.

“It’s been a good 12 months for me, but winning the Welsh National PGA Championship was definitely the highlight,” he said.

“I won four titles in all last year so I do feel that 2009 went well for me. Little Aston’s a good course, I enjoy playing there and have done well in the past.

“Last year’s final at Dundonald put a few people off I think because of the weather but this year it’s at The Oxfordshire which I’ve played before as part of the European Tour Qualifying School.

“I didn’t play that well in the final to be honest so I’m certainly looking to qualify again this time. I’ve won a couple of events already this season so I’m quite hopeful about the year ahead.”

Colin Mee, managing director of Glenmuir added: "The start of the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship qualifiers always marks the beginning of the tournament season for PGA pros, and we are really looking forward to another fantastic year of golf.

"Now more than ever the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship offers professionals the chance to compete with fellow professionals, but also to meet and share views and ideas on current trading. We hope all of the competitors will enjoy this year's tournament."
