In his first appearance in the tournament the 27-year-old from the Greetham Valley club in Rutland returned a five under-par 68 to lead the 17 qualifiers into the final.

Now the Leicestershire professional will be aiming to make his mark at St Andrews Bay in August where a £10,000 prize awaits the winner not to mention an automatic place in the Great Britain & Ireland team to face the United States for the 2005 PGA Cup matches.

Evans, whose round was built on a sensational start, has been at Greetham Valley for the past four years. He picked up four shots in the first six holes and held on after that to finish three strokes clear of Nicholas Oakley (Hinckley), Stephen Yates (Kenilworth) and Garry Mercer (Sedgley).

"It's the first time I've played in the Glenmuir so to make the final is just fantastic," said Evans.

"It was pretty blustery out there and we had some heavy showers but I made a great start, took advantage of the par fives which were playing relatively easy and managed to hang on."

"I reached the finals of the PGA Assistants¹ Championship two years ago and finished tied eighth at St Annes Old Links and hopefully I can do well in the Glenmuir finals at St Andrews Bay."
