Glenmuir Men's Club Professional Championship

John Dwyer, head pro at Ashbourne in Co Meath, fulfilled two ambitions today at Royal Porthcawl, by winning the Glenmuir Club Professional Championship, and being chosen for the third time to represent Great Britain & Ireland in the PGA Cup (the club pros' version of the Ryder Cup).

That match takes place in Georgia in September, but he claimed his victory, worth £10,000, and one that he led from start to finish, was his biggest ever win.

"I've made cuts in European Tour events, but winning this far outweighs that. I think it'll take a day or two to sink in, but this means a huge amount to me."

The 33-year-old was the first to admit, though, that he'd had a fiery battle with playing partner, Andrew Barnett. In fact Dwyer led by either one or two strokes all day, but Barnett tied him with a birdie on the 71st hole.

Both finished with an aggregate 282, six under, and the play-off had to go to three holes before Dwyer fired in a great nine-iron to six feet on the par-four 18th, and holed for a winning birdie.

It has to be said, though, that Barnett came within inches of winning when a 30-foot birdie putt on the second sudden-death hole hovered on the lip - but stayed above ground.

As it was, he picked up £6,280 and was selected for the 10-man GB&I PGA Cup team.

The Derby area came within an ace of providing three members of the team. Paul Wesselingh, by dint of his 10 points last year, and six today for sharing seventh place, was a racing cert to line up for his fifth successive cup match.

James Whatley (Morley Hayes), with a super 68 for 286, tied third, but the man who missed out was Ian Walley (Mickleover). He and two others, Jon Bevan and George Ryall, went out in a play-off to decide the last two places. Bevan quickly grabbed his with a birdie at the first, and Ryall joined him a hole later when Walley was in the rough.

Only two of this September's team have previous PGA Cup experience, Wesselingh and Dwyer.
