Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship - It's Roger And In At Hindhead

Roger Tuddenham set a pace that no-one could match to lead the South Region qualifiers into the final of the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship at Hindhead (Thursday, May 22).

The 43-year-old, now based at the Hedge End Golf Centre near Southampton, carded a four-under par 66 to secure his place at Moortown, Leeds, in July where the winner will bank a cheque for £10,000 and secure the use of a top of the range Peugeot car for a year.

Tuddenham's last appearance in the final of the flagship event for club professionals was in 1998 when he was playing out of the West Region.

Now, 10 years on and a member of the South Region, he is looking forward to having another crack at the big prize.

"I played some pretty good golf out there and it's great to be going back to the Glenmuir finals. It's an event that is always special to the pros and I'll be looking forward to the trip to Moortown."

A run of three birdies in four holes on the back nine proved decisive for Tuddenham as he picked up shots at the 12th, 13th and 15th.

Worthing product Simon Brown, based in Germany for the last 23 years and currently at the Rhein Sieg club, will be making another trip back to his homeland after qualifying with a 68.

An experienced campaigner and a winner of the European club pros title in 1998, Brown admitted that he had been helped by "a few member's bounces" during an otherwise solid round of golf.

Steve Smith, head pro at the Urban Golf in London, came in late in the day with 69, a score also posted by Royal Winchester's Glaswegian native Alasdair Hay.

Ashford's Paul Sherman was heading for one of the day's best scores when he arrived on the 18th tee at two under, only for a double bogey to undo his earlier good work.

And Milford's Paul Creamer signed for a remarkably eventful 71 which included five birdies and six bogeys.
