The opening ceremony took place on Sunday 3rd August at Torrance House Golf Course in East Kilbride and the ceremony mimicked the well known Ryder Cup version itself.  And, to top that off, the young golfers enjoyed a family BBQ with live music.

The event also marked the 10th year of the ClubGolf Junior Strategy in South Lanarkshire which has given over 30,000 primary school children the opportunity to experience golf.

After qualifying through a series of junior open qualifying events across South Lanarkshire, and with PGA Professionals Peter Kerr and Lesley Mackay as the Team Coaches, twenty young golfers, twelve boys and eight girls, were full of excitement and anticipation as they teed up in teams of ten as the competition began on Monday 4th.

The brand new event was supported by South Lanarkshire’s four Local Sports Councils, Cambuslang & Rutherglen, Clydesdale, East Kilbride and Hamilton and local business and official uniform provider to the Ryder Cup teams, Glenmuir, provided both South Lanarkshire teams with uniforms for the event.

SLLC organized a logo design competition for pupils of South Lanarkshire’s secondary schools.   Well over 100 entries were received with the winning design being selected by Glenmuir’s designer.

Ryan Muir, 16 year old pupil at Larkhall Academy, was the designer of the winning event logo which has pride of place on the team uniforms and Ryan was presented with a framed jumper at the opening ceremony.

Gerry Campbell, General Manager of SLLC, said: “This is an excellent sporting summer for Scotland and with the Ryder Cup in September to look forward to we wanted to mark the occasion with a special event which would provide a unique opportunity for junior golfers across South Lanarkshire.

“This has been an excellent experience for all the players who took part and congratulations go to our winners and to all of our competitors for making it a great day to remember.  The opening ceremony was really something extra special too and a fun, family occasion.

“We thank everyone who has contributed towards the event including the local Sports Councils and Glenmuir and we hope that the event can become an annual fixture as a legacy of the Ryder Cup being held here in Scotland in 2014.”
