Kenny's Canter in the Rain

Scot Kenny Walker ended a spectacular round by holing a 20-footer on the final green for his eighth birdie of the day in the weather-delayed opening round yesterday (Tuesday 10/08/04)of the Glenmuir British Club Professional Championship at Southport & Ainsdale.

After torrential rain caused play to be suspended for seven hours, Walker, who spends more than half of the year working in Thailand, managed to sign for an eight-under 64 minutes before the klaxon brought play to a halt, leaving more than 100 of the 154 players with unfinished rounds.

In addition to his last-green putt the 37-year-old holed a monster 40-footer on the par-four third, and he holds a four-shot lead of those with completed rounds.

But on the course John Dwyer from Ashbourne, Ireland, is seven under after 12 holes, while Albert MacKenzie (Saunton) and Tim Spence (Sweetwoods) are both six under after 15 holes.

Walker, whose father, a retired dentist, was caddying for him, gave him credit for helping in his alignment of putts, something that had been giving the Scot some problems throughout the month of June - before he had a month's break in Thailand.

But in the earlier part of the season Walker had been almost invincible in Scottish Region activity, and leads the money list there with over #15,500 despite his month's break.

Play will restart this morning at 7.30, and it's hoped to get the second round under way at 10.30. Leading completed scores:

64 - K Walker (Springfield Royal)

68 - C Hislop (Eden), J Le Roux (Worldham Park)

69 - C Crowder (Lee Park), C Giddins (Beauport Park), K Hutton (Downfield)

70 - C Ronald (Carluke), D Valentine (Chorlton-cum-Hary)

71 - K Vince (Rushmere), A Bailey (Ashridge), M Thompson (Parkstone)
