Moortown to Host Glenmuir

Britain’s first ever Ryder Cup venue, Moortown Golf Club, will host the 2008 Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship final from July 29 - August 1. After years of being known as the ‘club pros’ championship the event has been renamed to recognise the variety of roles filled by PGA professionals within the golf industry.

But while the name has changed, the entry criteria for the event remains the same with competitors still required to be working a minimum of 25 hours in golf.

"The reason for the change in title is twofold," explained PGA Chief Executive Sandy Jones. "Firstly, emphasising PGA professional helps strengthen the brand so when people use it they know what it means.

"In years gone by you had tour pros and club pros - now it's more accurate to say tour pros and PGA professionals.

"The name change reflects the fact that many of our members are now engaged in an increasing variety of roles across the golf industry and not just solely in club professional posts.

"There has been a move among the majority of PGAs in the world including America, Australia and Canada, to reclassify their members as PGA professionals and this is in keeping with this."

Andy Bough, Glenmuir's marketing director added: "We are delighted that Moortown will be the challenge for next year's Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship. "The course is wonderful and the club has a great history. It is exactly the type of top quality venue that we want for the championship. "The later date will allow the regional qualifiers to be played in better weather on courses that will be in optimum condition, and we are sure this will encourage the highest ever number of entries. "We fully support the name change as part of a process of enhancing the image and profile of all PGA professionals, and are committed to ensuring that the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship remains the highlight of the Association's tournament schedule."
