Nightmare Nine Floors Jason

A disastrous quintuple bogey at the 14th hole robbed Jason McCreadie of a wire-to-wire victory in the Glenmuir Club Professional Championship at St Andrews Bay Resort, allowing playing partner, Gordon Law (Uphall, West Lothian), to seize the initiative for the biggest win of a 20-year career.

Law, in addition to winning £10,000, had the extra bonuses of an automatic place in the 2005 PGA Cup team to meet the United States, and the use of a luxury Peugeot 607 worth £22,000 for the next year.

McCreadie, who finished with an 80 for 284, to Law's 71 (280), was admirably philosophical about his nightmare nine. Two balls ran out of bounds (which is menacingly placed just a foot off the back of the green), both 135-yard wedge shots, and a careful third consciously short of the green left a chip and two putts.

Still trying to recover from that he watched his tee shot at the 221-yard 15th land pin-high, and go through into the rough, for another dropped shot.

Law, winner earlier this year of the Grampian Freight International Northern Open at Cruden Bay, who'd begun three behind, reduced the gap by the turn, thanks in part to an eagle three at the fourth. The three-stroke lead was restored, though, when Jason birdied the short 11th. That, however, was as good as it got for the 33-year-old from Buchanan Castle.

Law, having dropped a shot at 12, birdied the next two, ironically chipping in at his partner's Donnybrook of a hole. Four safe pars saw him home to a well-earned victory, while Jason, overtaken first by Scott Henderson and then Ian Keenan (Royal Liverpool), slipped to a six-man share of fourth.

Aberdonian Henderson, the 1997 European Tour rookie of the year, was far from happy about the lie his ball found on the fringe of the final green, a hole that cost him a bogey six after he thinned a wedge from one fringe to the other.
