No Doubts For Thomas As He Dominates The Oxfordshire In Glenmuir Qualifier

Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship In Association With Peugeot & MPI Results Release

20 May 2010 1 minute read No Doubts For Thomas As He Dominates The Oxfordshire In Glenmuir Qualifier

Thomas Fleming admitted he caught The Oxfordshire course as its ‘softest’ as he finished top of the leaderboard by four shots at the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship South Region Qualifier.

But he insists the final - at the same venue - could be a totally different prospect.

Fleming, of the nearby Frilford Heath Club, made a smooth transition from assistant to PGA professional as he produced an excellent eight under par round of 68.

He was one of 30 players to qualify for the Glenmuir final, supported by Peugeot and MPI Financial Services, which will be played over 72-holes at The Oxfordshire, from August 10-13.

Fleming won the PGA Assistants’ Championship qualifier last year at Royal Ascot before finishing seventh in The London Club Final. And he admits it is good to shake off his PGA studies and simply play.

He said: “It’s good to get that weight off your mind, I would never try to sound complacent but I want to make that progression to being a PGA professional if I can.

“It’s far from easy but that’s the way it’s worked out, not only for me though, there’s a lot of people who did well here who I’ve come through with.

“And I am looking forward to the final because I love playing The Oxfordshire. It’s close by and a superb course.

“On this occasion I think the players caught it at its softest as the weather was good.  If the wind gets up it can be an animal, it just didn’t show its teeth this time.

“But I played the Assistants’ Final last and it was the first time I realised how big that was so the Glenmuir final should be a great experience.”

Fleming made the round his own when he started the back nine with four birdies and an eagle - which added to the one he had already made at the seventh. And he admitted he was spurred by a little friendly rivalry.

“Dan Seymour’s my old mate and I knew I had to try and beat him if I could!” he said.

“I was two under after nine but the next five hole spell made the difference. The putts just went in."

Seymour, of Newbury Golf Centre, tied with Gary Marks, World of Golf, for second spot at four under par, well behind Fleming.
