Rob Tames the Gales

Rob Bundy, out in the first game, made light of blustery conditions at Selby yesterday, Wednesday 24 May, and comfortably won himself a place in the 72-hole final of Great Britain's premier event for club professionals.

On a day when par golf was rare among the field of 65 players, Rob, who teaches at Spaldington Golf Centre, near Howden, led the north-east qualifiers for the Glenmuir Club Professional Championship with a one-under 70, and will now tee up chasing a £10,000 top prize at Prince's, near Sandwich, in three weeks' time.

But his spirits were far from high as he walked off the second green, having already marked up a couple of bogeys.

"Probably the best shot I struck all day was the four-foot putt for a much-needed par at the third," admitted 28-year-old Rob, "Otherwise I'm pretty sure the wheels would've been coming off."

Birdies at the sixth, 13th, 14th and 16th, the last a 440-yarder into a ferocious wind that needed a driver and a three-iron to 10 feet, were the bedrock of his round, and even a three-putt for a bogey at the 17th left Bundy signing for a 70, a score he'd have happily taken before going out.

Rob's playing partner, Selby's Nick Ludwell, was only a stroke behind in second place, and is looking forward to his return to Prince's, where he set a course record 63 four years ago in winning £10,000 in a PGA Europro Tour event.

The leading 15 players at Selby will now join regional qualifiers from all over Great Britain and Ireland from 13 - 16 June at Prince's, where the winner picks up not only £10,000 but is exempt from regional qualifying for The Open Championship, and drives a top-of-the-range Peugeot for a year
