Scotland End 9-Year Drought

Scotland's victory in the Glenmuir-supported International Team Championship at Roda Golf & Beach Resort, Murcia, Spain, ended a nine-year period when, almost inexplicably, they had failed to add to their record-setting run of five wins in seven years, beginning in 1990.

When they finally added their name to the trophy for a sixth time, however, they did so in a manner that the Tartan Tour giants of the nineties - Russell Weir, John Chillas and their ilk - would have been proud. Scotland's latest heroes are Craig Lee, Jim McKinnon and Sam Cairns who led from starting line to finishing post with a best-two-from-three total of 29-under-par 547, for the 72-hole tournament to share the €6,000 first prize. Lee was the inspiration of the Scotland team, and the ITC's individual lowest scorer overall, with a four-round total of 267, 21 under par.

Ireland's Robert Giles, John Dwyer and Leslie Walker made a bold attempt to outscore Scotland to record their second victory but settled for an honourable runners-up place on 26-under, 550 after pulling back two shots on the Scots with one to hole to play.

Giles, who was a member of the last Ireland team to win the tournament in 1998, was second-highest individual scorer with an 18-under-par total of 270 to finish three shots clear of Norway and Wales, with pre-tournament favourites, England, in fifth place.
