Talent Spotter Stevens Ready To Shake It Up At Glenmuir Qualifier

Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship In Association With Peugeot & MPI Press Release

12 May 2010 2 minute read Talent Spotter Stevens Ready To Shake It Up At Glenmuir Qualifier
Starmaker Scott Stevens won’t just be thinking of his own career prospects when he lines up for the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship South Region qualifier at The Oxfordshire on May 19.

The PGA pro, who finished joint top in the Glenmuir qualifier last year, loves to compete but juggles his playing commitments with his other passion - junior coaching at his Staplehurst club in Kent.

Stevens is one of a 144-strong field in action at The Oxfordshire which will also take centre stage when it hosts the £78,000 final later in the summer from August 10-13.

Among the contingent of local pros hoping to make it through to the final will be Russell Marbey (Frilford Heath), Marc Wheeler (Oxford Golf Centre) and Lee Jackson (North Oxford).

Stevens, meanwhile like many PGA pros, is heavily involved in nurturing the next generation of youngsters and while he would love one of his 100 pupils to become a household name one day, ultimately he just wants to introduce youngsters to the fun of playing golf.

“If any of them did go on to do really well, then that would be fantastic,” said Stevens.

“And I will be getting a junior tour up and running soon to try and give them that competition experience. But we don’t push anyone to do that, we just want them to enjoy themselves to start with.

“It has to be fun first and foremost.”

Stevens still gets his golfing kicks from competing and is a huge fan of the Glenmuir event which is also supported by Peugeot and MPI Financial Services: “It’s a superb tournament and gives players like myself the chance to compete over four rounds,” he said.

“And playing a course like The Oxfordshire will be a joy. I competed on the Challenge Tour myself for a while but it’s tougher than people think, particularly financially, so I’m happy with what I’m doing now but I still love to play and compete, I haven’t lost that!”

Also due to play is Wychwood’s Adam Souter who was joint second in this qualifier last year after shooting one under and Steve Purves of Leeds Castle who also qualified 12 months ago.

James Harris, of Tunbridge Wells’ Nevill Golf Club, is already in the Glenmuir grand final after finishing second in last year’s championship final at Dundonald.

“The start of the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship qualifiers always marks the beginning of the tournament season for PGA pros, and we are really looking forward to another fantastic year of golf," said Glenmuir managing director Colin Mee.

"Now more than ever the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship offers professionals the chance to compete with fellow professionals, but also to meet and share views and ideas on current trading. We hope all of the competitors will enjoy this year's tournament.”
