From handwashing to flat drying, we run through everything you need to know to keep your favourite items in top condition.

Wash sparingly
Knitwear tends to lose its shape quicker than other forms of clothing so you should be cautious about over-wearing your favourite pieces. Purchasing a second jumper may be expensive but it will allow you to rotate items to extend the lifespan of your on-course outfits. Remember, you don’t have to wash wool after every wear and a good airing should be enough to get rid of any mild odours.

Wash with care
Although you can wash knitwear in a machine using a laundry bag, we recommend a hand wash for best results. You’ll need to fill a tub with lukewarm water and use a wool detergent, as conventional detergents include enzymes that will wear fibres away over time. Start by turning your jumper inside out and soaking it in the water for 10 minutes. Gently press the water through the fabric before rinsing again with cold water.

Dry properly
It’s important that you avoid drying your knitwear on a line. The weight of moisture on your garment can stretch your favourite sweater and leave it out of shape. Instead, you should flat dry your jumper on a light coloured towel or a special drying mesh screen, designed to fit over the bathtub. Remove as many creases as possible as you lay the top out to dry and avoid leaving it exposed to direct sunlight. Radiators can lead to uneven drying and damage the colour of your jumper.

Reduce bobbles
If you loathe bobbles on your knitwear you should keep a lint brush handy. The tools can be used to smooth over your golf jumper and prevent small fibres from collecting over time. You can even remove the bobbles or pilling after they’ve appeared on your favourite pieces by using an electric fabric shaver. The handheld devices are a great way of helping to return your knitwear back to former glories.

Store appropriately
Knitwear should always be folded rather than left on a hanger. The weight of materials hanging from a rail can stretch items out of shape over time. It’s better to keep jumpers flat and fold them alongside moth balls to prevent the critters and their larvae from damaging your favourite garments. If you plan on storing jumpers away for a longer period, you should consider placing them in vinyl bags to protect them from gathering dust and losing shape.
