On July 10, Royal Troon opens its gates to the public as they flock to watch some of the world’s best golfers fight it out to be crowned Open champion.

And while the on-course antics are sure to entertain, what goes on off the fairways is just as fun - becoming one of the social events of the golfing calendar. Picking the right outfit is almost as difficult as keeping your drive off the tracks on the tricky ‘railway’ hole.

Dress Code

A good place to start is the club’s dress code. While this doesn’t apply to those visiting for the Open, it’s always good to know what people would be wearing at the venue on a regular day.

The code states that everyone should “arrive in suitable golfing attire”. This though assumes you’d be playing, not simply watching, so don’t turn up in your golf spikes.

The key element of the dress code is what to wear when you’re visiting for a social occasion, or after the game. It suggests smart casual with tailored shorts allowed on the courses and Clubhouse surrounds.

Fortunately, smart shorts are very much in this season. Worn with a relaxed blazer and polo shirt they create a preppy look that’s perfect for lazing around between holes or sipping a cocktail at the clubhouse.

And while jeans, trainers, and round-neck T-shirts aren’t allowed on the courses or in the Clubhouse, you’ll be free to wear whatever when you’re a paying ticket holder. And as you’ll be walking a good distance between holes, we suggest some strong and comfy shoes.

Scottish style

As you’re in Scotland, it seems only fitting you should embrace a bit of traditional Scottish style. And to be honest, why wouldn’t you? From its classic Argyle print, world-famous tartans and amazing tweeds there’s so much to choose from.

For men, as it’ll be the height of summer, we suggest a lightweight polo maybe with a bold Argyle print. Team this with a pair of chinos for a smart casual look. Go for a darker chino, as light-coloured ones will show up grass and mud stains. Also, pack a light cashmere jumper – it might be July, but it’s still Scotland.

Women can add a splash of colour with an Argyle print jumper. Ours come in a range of bright colours from blue and white to purple.

Weather

As mentioned, you’ve got to dress for the weather. In a day, you could go from blazing sunlight to torrential downpours and back again.

Make sure you’ve got the following in your backpack or shoulder bag:

  • Good-sized umbrella
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Change of top
  • Sun hat and glasses
  • Scarf or throw for warmth or protection from sun

All you need to do now is sit back and enjoy the day!
