Golf doesn’t always have to be played on a traditional green. From paradise islands to the dizzy heights of a mountain top, we’ve handpicked some of the world’s most interesting courses if you’re in need of a change in scenery.

Legend Golf & Safari Resort (Hole 19) - South Africa
Fancy taking a shot from the world’s longest, and highest, par-3 hole? Then the Xtreme 19th is your place. You’ll be whisked by helicopter to Hangklip Mountain where you’ll find the tee box – a full 430 metres above the green, which itself is designed in the shape of the African continent.

Taking shots from this vantage point offers jaw-dropping panoramic views of South Africa as your ball flies through the air, taking almost 20 seconds to drop. You could even pocket $1 million for hitting a hole in one – so what better time to start practising your game?

Le Touessrok Golf Club - Mauritius
Ever imagined playing golf on a stunning paradise island? This 19-hole dream course will be perfect whatever your level. It’s a 10-minute boat ride away from the main Shangri-La’s Le Touessrok Resort Spa. Or if you really want to experience the jet set lifestyle, you can fly in by helicopter. You’ll find yourself spoiled by breath-taking landscapes and, naturally, the promise of ocean views at every hole. After experiencing this luxurious spot, you may find it difficult to play golf anywhere else.

La Jenny - France
No need to worry about what to wear when you play at  La Jenny, as it’s the only naturalist course in the world. If you fancy it (and the weather’s fine), you can drive shots on the six-holes and feel at one with nature. You can, of course, play with your full gear on if you’d prefer. So, if you’re up for a golfing break with a difference, it’s definitely worth booking a holiday at this naturist resort.

Uummannaq – Greenland
Ever wondered what it’d be like to play golf on ice? Pack your thermal wear and head to the small town of Uummannaq. On this nine-hole course, icebergs take the place of trees. You’ll be striking your best shots on snow and ice with a red ball, and heading to the whites instead of the greens. During March, the World Ice Golf Championships are held here for players with handicaps of up to 36.

The Furnace Creek Golf Course at Death Valley – California
If desert golf ticks your box, then this unique destination is a must. It’ll see you take on the hottest and driest rounds you’ve surely ever experienced, as well as driving shots 214 ft (65m) below sea level on this 18-hole, par 70 course. Palm trees are dotted around the fairway and you’ll enjoy panoramic mountain views from what is the world’s lowest golf course. Remember, you’ll really need to stay hydrated to keep on top of your game.
