Golfing resolutions for 2018

Want to improve your golf performance in 2018? Set yourself a new year’s resolution with our tips…

It’s that time of year again: we’re setting our new year’s resolutions. While most people choose something generic – like losing weight or learning a new skill – the key to achieving your resolutions is to set smart, specific goals that you can actively work towards. When it comes to golf, there’s always room for improvement, whether it’s perfecting a skill or simply playing more. Not sure where to start? We’re here to help…

Get on the green more regularly
It’s everyone’s go-to resolution, but ultimately, you’ll do nothing to improve your golf game in 2018 unless you get out on the green more. Try laying out your golf clothes and packing your bag the night before you go so it’s ready and waiting in the morning, or bringing them to work with you if you go straight from the office. Not enough willpower? Set up dates on the green with a friend so you know there’s someone else relying on you to get there.

Perfect your swing
It goes hand in hand with the first, but putting some time and practice into perfecting your swing will pay off in the long run. Try dedicating a session at the beginning or end of every practice on the green to practising. Golf Digest has this top tip: every time you take a swing, rather than talking yourself through all the steps – keeping your head down, turning all the way through – focus on just one or two thoughts. It’ll make your swing far more natural.

Take a golfing trip
Okay, so this one’s more of a treat than a resolution – but make it your goal to book some time away with friends on a golfing holiday. Whether it’s Portugal or Scotland, you’ll make great memories and you’ll be able to practise on a brand new course, too.

Book a lesson
Is a certain skill not up to scratch? Something niggling away at you about your performance? Take the plunge and book a lesson to improve your weakness, whether it’s chipping or perfecting your swing.

Walk more
It’s all too easy to head to the cart to travel between shots, but it does nothing for your fitness. Let go of the laziness and commit to walking everywhere in 2018 – not only is it great for your health and your heart, but you can enlist a friend and enjoy catching up on the way, too.

Smarten up
A new year, new resolutions – why not some new gear, too? You might have got new clubs for Christmas, but invest in your look with a few key buys to smarten up your normal golfing uniform. Whether it’s some new knitwear or a fresh pair of socks, you’ll not only look great, but you’ll feel better on the course too.
