The 35-year-old produced a flawless final round of 64 to overhaul overnight leader William McGirt, who pulled on his golf clothing two-ahead of the field on Sunday at 12 under par.

Journeyman McGirt, whose two best finishes on the PGA Tour have come in two runner-up spots in the Canadian Open, floundered in the final round, carding a two-over-par 73 to drop back into a tie for sixth position.

Watson, alongside US Ryder Cup teammate Dustin Johnson, led the assault on McGirt's lead, with both players carding a barrage of birdies on the front nine to move ahead of the 34-year-old.

Watson, who came to the 18th tee with a shot lead over Johnson, claimed his first title since he won the Masters in 2012 in dramatic style, holing out for a birdie three and a two-shot victory.

"I went out and went bogey free and made seven birdies so jumped up there and had a chance. (Today) I got hot early, holed a bunker shot on six to really get it going and went bogey free again. So it was a nice," he said.
