Cheetham Looking For Champion Display At Glenmuir

Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship In Association With Peugeot & MPI Press Release

29 April 2010 2 minute read Cheetham Looking For Champion Display At Glenmuir
Manchester City fan and PGA pro Jonathan Cheetham is targeting a football and golfing double over the next two weeks.

The Gatley PGA pro hopes to see his beloved City clinch a place in the Champions League before turning his attention to qualifying for the £78,000 final of the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship.

Cheetham will be one of 71 qualifiers at Hesketh Golf Club on May 7, all after one of a handful of spots available for the flagship final later in the year at The Oxfordshire, August 10-13.

And if he does qualify for the 72-hole tournament which is supported by Peugeot and MPI Financial Services, he will hope for better luck than he endure in last year’s final when he suffered a bout of illness during the opening round which forced him to retire after just nine holes.

“My friend’s coming over to caddy for me at Hesketh and we’ll be taking in the Manchester City v Spurs game two days beforehand,” said Cheetham.

“Hopefully they can win and finish in the top four although I think there’s still a few twists and turns to go there yet.

“Then it’s on to Hesketh which is a course that I like and I usually manage to do well there.”

Hesketh was the scene of last year’s qualifier but fierce weather turned it into a brutal test as Cheetham remembers all too well.

“It was wild but in a daft way I sort of enjoyed it even though it was very tough out there,” he said.

“It wasn’t just a putting contest. Some of the holes were almost unreachable but it was a real rest of your skills.”

James Cousins (Richmond Golf Club) managed to tie for top spot last year but admits he will be taking a look at the weather forecast before this year’s qualifier.

“Last year was a howling gale and some of the toughest conditions I’ve ever played in. The wind must have been getting up to 40mph and it was just a matter of surviving and keeping the ball in play.”

Also playing at Hesketh will be Mossock Hall’s David Shacklady and Craig Shave (Whetstone) the 2009 Midland Order of Merit winner.

Other players include Joel Rodwell (Southport & Ainsdale), Peter Allen, (Ashton in Makerfield) and Thomas Bolton (Hazel Grove) who all figured strongly in last year’s qualifier.

“The start of the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship qualifiers always marks the beginning of the tournament season for PGA pros, and we are really looking forward to another fantastic year of golf," said Glenmuir managing director Colin Mee.

"Now more than ever the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship offers professionals the chance to compete with fellow professionals, but also to meet and share views and ideas on current trading. We hope all of the competitors will enjoy this year's tournament.”
