The US Amateur champion, 19, has dropped out of Northwestern University after just one semester in Chicago.

The Sheffield teenager is looking to turn his attentions towards the three majors - US Masters, US Open and Open Championship - that he is exempt for this year.

It is thought that Fitzpatrick's family were keen to see him continue his education and encouraged him to go to Northwestern, which had higher standards than other universities for students on sports scholarships.

"It's a very personal decision," Donald, who graduated from Northwestern with a degree in art theory and practice, said.

"I think Matt struggled in school a little bit. He found Northwestern tough academically and found it tough to juggle academics and golf.

"I haven't talked to Matt yet, but if he wants to call me, he's more than welcome to.

"I think everyone is different. Personally, I think the four years I had were invaluable. I really enjoyed my experience. I felt like I got better at golf but I just enjoyed college life and I think that was great for me.

"That's not for everyone and I wish Matt all the best."

Fitzpatrick won the silver medal for leading amateur when he pulled on his golf clothing in the Open Championship at Muirfield last year, where he finished in a tie for 44th.

"I very much enjoyed my experience at Northwestern," he said in a statement released by the university. "Based on the opportunities I have right now from a golf perspective, I feel it is important to dedicate 100 percent of my time to the game and have decided to withdraw from university in the US."
