The Australian sports star beat Denmark's Thomas Bjorn and his countryman Adam Scott to win the individual prize at the ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf, as well as claiming the team prize with Scott.

Day had held a one-shot lead overnight and a fourth-round 70 meant he finished on 10 under, two shots clear of Bjorn who finished with a 71.

Scott closed with a five under par 66 to finish a further shot back, giving Australia an aggregate team score of 17 under, 10 shots clear of nearest challengers the United States.

The World Cup came less than two weeks after Day learned that eight of his relatives, including his grandmother, had tragically died in the typhoon which hit the Philippines.

However, his mother and sister were in Melbourne to support him.

Speaking to reporters, Day said: "It's just been an amazing tournament for me. My mother, my family, coming down to support me. I'm just so happy the hard work has paid off, and I'm glad it happened in Melbourne."
