The 31-year-old is aiming to regain his main tour playing rights after entering a three-year slump that saw the three-time European Tour winner lose his card in 2011.
Dougherty has recently been moonlighting as a pundit on Sky Sports, where his wife Di works as a golf presenter, during the European Tour's South Africa leg of the season.
After an articulate display, there have been rumours that the Liverpool-born golfer could make a full-time switch to the commentary box from the golf course.
Despite his dramatic downturn in form, Dougherty is still young enough to overcome this slump, and will be keen to put a disastrous 2013 behind him and get back playing on Tour rather than commenting on it.
Yet, he is also not alone in the field this week of former European Tour players who have hit a rough patch in their careers. Oliver Wilson, who was part of Nick Faldo's 2008 Ryder Cup team, will pull on his golf clothing at Karen Country Club this week, and like Dougherty, will be eager to get his season off to a strong start as he bids to reclaim his European Tour card.
