The 23-year-old American was called up late to last year's event and despite being world number 1,207 he pulled on his golf clothing to famously clinch the title.

The Californian player defeated the likes of David Lynn to secure his first PGA Tour win.

At the time he was due to compete in the Web.com tour, when several players backed out of the 2013 Wells Fargo Championship.

Since his PGA success he has been unable to record a top 25 finish.

However, he hopes after working with swing coach Greg LaBelle and having his childhood friend Aaron Terry as his caddie - the same caddie who saw him swing to success last year - he might find his way in this year's tournament.

Ernst teed off alongside K.J. Choi and Retief Goosen on Thursday.
