Liselotte Neumann's side's 18-10 win was the biggest margin of victory in the competition's history, eclipsing the 17.5-10.5 victory record that the Europeans set a Barsebäck a decade ago.

Leading 10.5-5.5 heading into Sunday's singles at Colorado Golf Club, the Europeans pulled on their golf clothing needing 3.5 points to retain the trophy that they won two years ago at Killeen Castle in Ireland.

The Europeans got off to a flying start, with 17-year-old Charley Hull, the competition's youngest ever player, cruising to a 5&4 victory over Paula Creamer.

Hull's victory helped to stem the tide of a scoreboard that had steadily started to swell with American red.

Anna Nordqvist, who won her foursomes match on Saturday morning with a walk-off hole-in-one on the par-3 17th, found a birdie on the same on in Sunday's singles to pull her match level with world number two Stacy Lewis.

The Swede then almost snatched victory on the 18th after Lewis left herself a tricky eight-footer for par on the final hole. However the American knocked in the putt for a well deserved half.

Carlota Ciganda put the Europeans within a point of retaining the cup with a 4&2 victory over Morgan Pressel, while Brittany Lang defeated Azahara Muñoz 2&1 to restore some American pride.

An hour rain delay forced the players off the course with the score at 13-7.

After the restart, Sweden's Caroline Hedwall played her approach shot on 18 to five feet to set up a birdie putt that would retain the Solheim Cup for Europe. Michelle Wie had a chance to tie the match but the American's birdie attempt slid by allowing Europe to reach the magical 14 points mark.

Her 1-up victory over Michelle Wie also meant that Hedwall became the first player in Solheim Cup history to win five out of five matches.

Europe won the cup outright shortly afterwards when Solheim Cup stalwart Catriona Matthew rolled in a four-foot par putt on 18 to earn half a point against Gerina Piller.

Suzann Pettersen and Giulia Sergas earned half a point each for Europe after halves against Lizette Salas and Jessica Korda respectively.

Lexi Thompson added the second victory of the day for the US with a 4&3 win over France's Caroline Masson, while Jodi Ewart and Beatriz Recari added two further points to the European total with wins over Brittany Lincicome and Angela Stanford.

Finally Cristie Kerr and Karine Icher decided to call their match a half on 18 after they were overcome by fading light.
