Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, pictured here, has made the golf news by staging a match which saw one of its female members take part for the first time.

That accolade went to Curtis Cup star Lady Bonallack, wife of Sir Michael Bonallack, the club's former secretary.

She was part of the R&A's team which took on the Links Trust's golfers in their yearly friendly game, which finished all-square.

The move at the Fife-based club follows last September's decision to allow women into their ranks. The decision was passed by a majority of 85%.

The first batch of 15 women into its 2,400-strong membership was announced in February.

Laura Davies, Swede Annika Sorenstam, Belle Robertson and Princess Anne were among them. Farmer's daughter Robertson won the 1981 British Ladies' Amateur championship.
