Green Wins on Countback

Gillingham's Steven Green tied the four-under 68 set earlier in the day by Rob Edwards (Lee on the Solent), and underlined his performance by dislodging the Hampshire player on the card countback.

Playing on Monday 14 April at Camberley Heath in the season's first regional qualifying round for the Glenmuir Club Professional Championship, the pair headed a field of 90 players bidding for 17 regional places in the £78,000 Glenmuir event, to be held at St Andrews Bay in mid-August.

Both players boasted eagles on their cards, Rob holing a 30-foot putt for a three at the 513-yard ninth, while Steven didn't tax his putter by firing a seven-iron to no more than two feet at the 498-yard 13th.

The cheque for £250 was shared equally between them, but by dint of his inward 33, one better than Edwards, Green was the winner of the sponsors' commemorative glassware. The stakes are much higher at St Andrews Bay - the winner there picks up £10,000 and an automatic place in the 2005 Great Britain and Ireland PGA Cup team to meet the United States.

Tim Spence, recently appointed professional at Battle, near Hastings, was wondering whether he'd done the right thing playing in the event after reaching the turn in a mediocre two-over 39.

However, a dramatic reversal of fortunes for the 36-year-old former Challenge Tour player saw him scoop up five birdies, with no loss of shots, for an inward 30, and a safe qualifying place.

Richard Adams seems to like Camberley Heath. The South Winchester pro' gathered nine birdies there in last year's Lombard Trophy regional final. This time he won a 10-man play-off for the remaining place by being the only player to birdie the first extra hole.
