Harrington Advice Tees Up Kelly For Glenmuir Challenge
Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship In Association With Peugeot & MPI Press Release
27 April 2010 2 minute read
The PGA pro from Dublin’s St Margaret’s Golf Club tees up for the flagship event, which is supported by Peugeot and MPI Financial Services, having spent the winter in California taking his game apart shot by shot at the Titleist Performance Institute in a bid to iron out glitches in his game.
And he hopes his continuing close-working association with Harrington will help him learn from his mistakes ahead of the coming season and culminate in reaching the £78,000 Glenmuir final at The Oxfordshire from August 10-13.
“I’ve been working with Dr. Liam Hennessey and Padraig Harrington. Having access to what Padraig has to help him is phenomenal,” said Kelly.
“Whatever my results this year, I know that my preparations will have been perfect.
“What Padraig has told me to do this year is to learn from my mistakes - and that’s something I would never have done in the past.
“I would make mistakes, but then just dismiss them.”
He added: “The Glenmuir is an event that I should have done better in over the years and haven’t for some reason.
“I don’t know whether it’s because I put too much pressure on myself to do well. It’s a flagship event and one I consider it to be very important.
“The answer is to try and treat it like any other event, but it’s easy to say that.
“I’ve qualified for a few now but never really done anything and it’s an event I would like to go out and win if I can.”
Also in action will be 2008 Irish Order of Merit winner Robert Giles (Greenore), Michael O'Shea (Callan GC) and David Mortimer - the 2006 Irish PGA Champion, who is playing in the Glenmuir event for the first time.
“Since 2006 I’ve been teaching a lot and I seem to have been involved in other people’s golf rather than my own,” said Mortimer.
“However, I got talking with a few buddies and decided this year was right to make time to practise and refocus. I wanted to play some tournaments as I’d missed that side of the game.”
Glenmuir managing director Colin Mee added: “The start of the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship qualifiers always marks the beginning of the tournament season for PGA pros, and we are really looking forward to another fantastic year of golf.
"Now more than ever the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship offers professionals the chance to compete with fellow professionals, but also to meet and share views and ideas on current trading. We hope all of the competitors will enjoy this year's tournament.”
