The 23-year-old rookie stormed round the Nicklaus Private course, carding seven birdies, an eagle and a solitary bogey to end the day at eight-under-par.
When the Georgian hung up his golf clothing last night he was just one shot off the lead held by Roberto Castro, Jason Kokrak and fellow rookie James Hahn.
"I got off to a fast start. Hit the pin on the first hole for eagle and it (the ball) went to about two feet. So it was cool to start out with a birdie. And gave me a little confidence and I just fed on it all day," he said.
Henley started his PGA Tour career in impressive style with victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii last week, holding off South African Tim Clark to win by three shots.
The rookie hopes to maintain the same winning formula this week that he did in Honolulu. "I haven't changed much. I'm still just kind of trying to do the same things. My swing instructor Charles came in on Tuesday and we worked on the same stuff and tried to keep it simple."
