The 32-year-old fired a one-under-par closing round of 71 around Quail Hollow to hold off the challenge from a rampant Furyk, who carded five birdies and an eagle en route to a closing 65.

Holmes, who underwent two brain operations in 2011, ended his run of 131 tournaments with a win, having last tasted victory at the FBR Open in 2008.

Having reached the 18th two shots clear, the Kentucky-native could even afford the luxury of a bogey to finish with as he claimed his third career victory.

Holmes, who will now pull his golf clothing on for this week's The Players Championship, told the PGA Tour official website that after missing most of last season following a roller-blading accident he was just pleased to be back out on the course.

Justin Rose was the highest placed European in the field, finishing three shots back of Holmes at 10 under par.
