Luckless Brooks Desperate To Make Glenmuir PGA Professional Final Again

Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship In Association With Peugeot & MPI Press Release

A Yorkshire PGA pro will be hoping bad luck doesn’t strike again as he bids to qualify for the flagship Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship.

Michael Brooks, of Malton & Norton Golf Club, made it through to last year’s final but had to pull out when he put his back out 24 hours before the event.

The 38-year-old returns to Moortown on May 10 hoping to again qualify for the £78,000 final which is supported by Peugeot and MPI Financial Services and takes place at The Oxfordshire from August 10-13.

“I didn’t even get to Dundonald Links (the 2009 final venue) so this year it would be nice to do well at Moortown again and actually play in the final this time,” said Brooks.

“The day before I was due to go, I put my back out. I was opening the security shutters at the club shop at 7am and felt it go and that was it. It was a real case of bad luck.”

Brooks, the son of former European Tour player Andrew Brooks, was Scottish Amateur champion in 1996 and his CV includes a 5&3 victory over Ryder Cup star Sergio Garcia during a Scotland International against Spain.

“I bet Sergio remembers that well,” smiled Brooks whose Malton club celebrates its centenary this year.

Also hoping to make it through to the final again is Andrew Turner (Knaresborough) who topped qualifying last year.

Turner enjoys a close relationship with his coach Hadyn Selby-Green who three years ago needed a kidney transplant to save his life.

“Haydn’s always had time for me, to work on my game, even when he was at death’s door,” he said.

“The great thing now is that Hadyn is even considering making a comeback and playing again on the Seniors Tour. It’s an amazing story really. He’s made me a better player, but he could easily have been gone a few years ago.”

Also playing at Moortown will be Alex James (De Vere Oulton Hall) who finished third in last year’s qualifier and another 2009 qualifier, Halifax’s Robert Booth.

“The start of the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship qualifiers always marks the beginning of the tournament season for PGA pros, and we are really looking forward to another fantastic year of golf," said Glenmuir managing director Colin Mee.

"Now more than ever the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship offers professionals the chance to compete with fellow professionals, but also to meet and share views and ideas on current trading. We hope all of the competitors will enjoy this year's tournament.”
