McIlroy is in the form of his life and he will win his fourth consecutive tournament if he finishes on top of the leaderboard in the first of the FedEx playoffs, The Barclays at Ridgewood Country Club on Sunday.

But Mickelson fancies his chances too, as like McIlroy he has won two play-off titles in the past and, clad in his Sunday best black golf clothing , the Californian finished a close second to the Northern Irishman in the US PGA Championship at Valhalla earlier this month.

The two are among the best 125 golfers in the world who will contest The Barclays this weekend before the field is whittled down to 100 for next week's Deutsche Bank Championship, and 70 for the BMW Championship the following week.

Mickelson is confident he will be one of the top 30 players in the FedEx rankings to play for the top prize of $10 million at the Tour Championship finale at East Lake.

As it stands Mickelson is 45th but he knows a win will see him shoot up the rankings.
