The 43-year-old Dubliner is one of the vice-captains for the long-anticipated biennial clash between Europe and the US at Gleneagles from September 26-28.

Harrington certainly wouldn't let his continent down with his dress sense though - his golf clothing is renowned for snappy exmaples of happy-coloured polo shirts and dark sweaters .

He claims that the vice-captaincy role will be a good testing ground for finding out his suitability for the top job.

It could give pundits a clear indication of whether he is the man to take over from current incumbent Paul McGinley for the 2016 tournament at Chaska's Hazeltine in Minnesota.

He has been named as the one of McGinley's assistants, alongside Miguel Angel Jimenez and Jose Maria Olazabal - with Des Smyth and Sam Torrance also on the backroom team.

Harrington told Sky Sports News' reporters that he is "absolutely interested" in being a future captain.

"It's a different job being the captain than a player," he adds. "Being a player is quite a selfish thing, it's all about you. The captaincy, man-managing 12 people, being able to get on with all of those people and being able to organise things, its a different sort of scenario."
