A golf club in Newcastle has become the first of its kind in the city to accept pay as you play golfers.

In a bid to encourage more people to pull on golf clothing and hit the green, Newcastle United Golf Club will now allow people to simply pay each time they want to play a few holes rather than paying out an annual membership fee.

The move comes after a 10% drop in members in the past year, however, the club states that the new system is also more suited to modern lifestyles.

United secretary Peter Jobe told the Journal newspaper: "I predict many other clubs will soon be doing the same - golf cannot turn a blind eye to what should obvious to everybody by now.

"Quite apart from the weather and the economy, take the example of a golfer in their early twenties with a young family and a busy career.

"That means it is not value for money."
