Kevin Pitts, head professional at Woodspring in Bristol, is enjoying an upturn in playing fortunes and aiming to make an impression when he tees up in Great Britain and Ireland’s flagship event for club professionals at Dundonald Links from June 16-19.
Pitts is one of a small army of West Country pros among the 156-strong field who will be competing for the £78,000 prize fund.
Others in the tournament include The Kendleshire’s Andrew Sherborne who Pitts credits with helping revive his game, and ex-long drive world champion Paul Barrington (The Players Club).
Pitts’ surge in form, capped by second place in the Glenmuir qualifier at The Players Club and which has seen him claim third place in the Gloucester and Somerset winter Order of Merit and second place in the Gloucester and Somerset Championship at The Kendleshire, is rich reward for his efforts.
“People keep asking ‘what’s the secret?’ but it’s simply more fitness, more practice and thinking right,” said Pitts, who has been at the club for 15 years.
“You don’t suddenly press a button. Someone called me the other day and said why didn’t you play like this five years ago. It’s not quite that easy.
“Now that I’ve got the bug, I’m just trying to put more into practice. This is the best run of form since I was a junior, it’s a great feeling.
“I generally feel a bit stronger, I always felt little bit lethargic over the years and if I didn’t feel right it would affect my scoring.
“I have been going to the gym, and even set up a little gym at home although obviously time is key. I’ve also been reading a lot of good psychology books. It’s a combination of things but at the moment it’s paying off.”
Pitts has also been working hard on his short game with Sherborne – a two-time European Tour winner.
“Andrew’s helped me with the short game throughout the winter, he feeds you good confidence and has seen some massive improvement in my short game,” added Pitts, who will be travelling up with regular fourball partner John Goymer (Wheathill).
