Gavin Caldwell takes over the post this autumn at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, an institution seldom out of the golf news .

The Fife-based club will perpetuate its old custom of using an Old Course first-tee driving-in ceremony for the new man's initiation on September 25.

Caldwell, born in Derry 68 years ago, has held membership at the club for 19 years and served on various committees there. He was the Walker Cup committee's chairman and club captain when the event was staged by Portmarnock Golf Club, where he was a trustee.

Caldwell, who has a career in the investment management business, is involved with many international investment firms' Irish subsidiaries.

The R&A club is widely regarded as golf's international "natural home".
