First Minister Alex Salmond welcomed Paul McGinley in Edinburgh before visiting the tournament's host course at Gleneagles, Perthshire.

The Irishman said: "I'm delighted to finally arrive in Scotland for the first time since being named captain for Gleneagles in 2014 and to have received such a warm welcome from the First Minister."

Preparations for the course and event itself are already in full swing and McGinley added: "I am very much looking forward to being a part of that and making the event a great success."

McGinley won the 2002 Ryder Cup and was vice-captain at Europe's next two victories in 2004 and 2006.

The First Minister said: "Paul has an enviable record in Ryder Cups having never been on the losing side in the tournament and, as a European golf fan, I well remember his nerveless winning putt, and exuberant celebrations, at the Belfry in 2002."

The Ryder Cup coming to Scotland has excited golf lovers and locals alike as more than 9,000 people have volunteered to help event organisers for a smooth tournament.

Successful candidates will be charged £75 for food, drink and clothing at the event, which organisers have been snubbed for. However, a spokesperson upholds that this is common with the Ryder Cup.

The event is expected to attract 250,000 spectators in September 2014, which will boost local economy by an estimated £100 million, according to the Scottish Government.
