The Ryder Cup captain will officially get the qualification process underway as he becomes the first man to tee off at Celtic Manor on Thursday morning.

"This is another significant milestone in my captaincy and it is going to be an exciting campaign to see who can make the team for Gleneagles next year," McGinley said.

"There are so many talented players who have the potential to make the team and it will be very interesting for me to watch it evolve."

As well as the nine automatic qualifiers McGinley will be allowed to pick three wildcards to pull on the European Ryder Cup shirts at Gleneagles.

"I don't think it would be fair to single anyone at the very start of the qualification process, but no matter what happens I know I will have 12 players who deserve to be on that team and who will give everything to keep European hands on that trophy next September."
