The 33-year-old shot a five-under-par final round to overhaul a six-shot deficit from the American duo of Gary Woodland and Matt Kuchar.

Scott shot a flawless 66, which saw him card three birdies in a row from the fifth to reach the turn at nine-under-par, two shots off the lead.

A birdie at 14 and a further one at 16 put Scott in a tie for the lead at 11-under-par with Justin Rose, Kevin Chappell and Gary Woodland.

After Chappell and Woodland faded down the stretch, US Open champion Justin Rose came down the last with a chance to force a playoff with Scott, but the Englishman carded a three-putt bogey on the 18th, to drop back to 10-under-par and miss out on the title.

World number one Tiger Woods also had a chance to tie with Scott, despite carrying a back injury for most of the week.

Woods who was visibly in pain during his final round came up just short with his birdie attempt at the last to miss out on a playoff by a single shot.

The American hasn't said whether or not he will pull on his golf clothing for the Deutsche Bank Championship, which begins in Boston on Friday.
