The former Chelsea and AC Milan striker swapped his football kit for golf clothing at the Kharkov Superior Cup at Superior Golf & Spa Report in Kharkov, Ukraine.
The 36-year-old got off to a rocky start, after a bogey at the first he pulled it back with a birdie on the second before carding seven bogeys in a row to reach the turn in 43.
However, the former European Footballer of the Year found some composure on the back nine coming back in 41.
Still an amateur, there is no word just yet from the Ukrainian whether this round has inspired him to go forth and attempt to join the pro ranks.
Former tennis star Yevgeny Kafelnikov was also in the field having made the transition to playing golf professionally after retiring from tennis.
The two-time Grand Slam champion ended the day at eight-over-par following an opening round of 80.
