Socially distanced golf: How courses are adapting

It’s time to get up to par with the new pandemic-proof golfing rules.

04 June 2020 1 minute read Socially distanced golf: How courses are adapting

Golf is back but not as we know it! Read on for some of the ways the classic game is modernising…

The clubhouse
A trip to the 19th hole is off the scorecards for the time being, as clubhouses and locker rooms across the country will be closed. Some courses may open their toilet facilities for patrons, but bar services and restaurant options are strictly off the menu. The R&A have even asked golfers to kindly leave immediately after their round to avoid the risk of spreading harmful bacteria.

Holes and flagsticks
Sinking your next shot will feel a little different as regulations have changed to minimise contact with the course. New rules mean that part of the ball should sit above the surface of the putting green when holed. Balls will also be considered holed with the next stroke if they finish within 12 inches of the hole. Although flagsticks will remain, players will be asked to avoid touching them at all times.

Bunkers and rakes
Rakes and ball retrievers will be removed from courses to reduce players touching the same surfaces. The change will mean golfers should smooth sand in bunkers using their clubs or feet. Courses may allow a player to place a ball into a more favourable spot in the bunker if it’s within one-club’s length and not nearer to the hole. The preferred lies should only be used if enjoyment of the game is significantly affected.

Bookings and scorecards
To allow clubs to keep a 10 minute interval between tee times, you’ll have to book your next round in advance. When booking you should also ask about the maximum number of players allowed in a group. During games you should ensure scorecards don’t exchange hands and there’s no need to physically return a scorecard to the Committee - emailing or texting scores is also encouraged.

Golfers’ responsibilities
The success of socially distant golf relies on players too. Revised rules ask golfers to arrive at the club no later than 15 minutes before a round and to make your way to the first tee no more than five minutes before tee off. With locker rooms out of action, it’s best to change your shoes in the car park and carry hand sanitiser in your bag too. You’ll have to avoid the temptation to pick up stray balls and remember to stay two metres apart from staff and other golfers.
