Having already claimed the FedEx Cup in the US earlier this year, Stenson became the first player to win both end-of-season races on the PGA Tour and the European Tour.

"I have managed to achieve something very special here this week. To get the double-double, winning the Tour Championship on both the tours, that's going to take some beating in the future. It's been a dream year, a dream summer for me, and the season of my life," he said.

The Swede pulled on his golf clothing on Sunday with a one-shot lead over Victor Dubuisson.

In the final round Stenson produced some inspiring golf under pressure, carding four birdies in a flawless four-under-par front nine. Further birdies at 12 and 14 put him comfortably clear of Dubuisson and a charging Ian Poulter. The Swede finished off his round in style with a tap-in eagle on the 18th to sign off for a bogey-free round of 64.

Stenson is now almost guaranteed a spot in the European Ryder Cup team having acquired more points on the European Ryder Cup World Points List than Martin Kaymer picked up as the final automatic qualifier for the 2012 team.
