Compared to the rest of the sporting world, golf is a fairly conservative game, from the rules of play to the etiquette on the green. With a strict dress code to follow, most players’ get-ups will be similar to the next, but occasionally you get a stand-out character with a unique sense of fashion. Read on for some of the most eccentric dressers – and their most memorable outfits – of all time…

John Daly
When you spot a pair of kaleidoscope trousers making their way across the fairway, you can bet it’s John Daly wearing them. The American golfer is as much loved for his dress sense as he is for his game: he favours bright-hued t-shirts and swirling, multicolour slacks while he’s playing. Our personal favourite? The psychedelic trousers and neon green shirt combo he wore at the Open de France ALSTOM in 2009.

Ian Poulter
Can anyone make a statement quite like Ian Poulter? The English player has dressed down for the green on occasion, but usually, he’s nothing if not eccentric when it comes to his style. There’s so many outfits to choose from, it’s hard to narrow it down: the time he wore a shimmering hold short? The blonde-and-red-swirled dye job he did on his hair – allegedly in the dark? We’re voting for the unashamedly British combination of the Union Jack vest and checked trousers he wore to the British Open.

Payne Stewart
American Payne Stewart might have chosen the more traditional argyle patterns and subtle colours over the kaleidoscopic swirls and multicoloured combinations of his peers, but his personal style was still something to behold. Rather than opting for clashing colours, Stewart liked to refine his silhouette by tucking his trousers into long, almost knee-high socks. Nevertheless, his outfits were always co-ordinated – like the yellow and blue combination he wore during the British Open Golf Championship in 1990.

Shingo Katayama topped the Japan Golf Tour’s money list five times in his career, but his attention-grabbing record doesn’t stop at his performance. The Japanese golfer is well known for his eccentric, often rule-breaking style – from pink gloves and trousers to the white cowboy hat he repeatedly insisted on wearing during his games.

Rickie Fowler
Bold colours are the go-to for American player Rickie Fowler, the popular golfer best known for his Justin Bieber-esque haircut and questionable moustache. Striped polo shirts, purple-checked pants and all-orange get-ups are among his favourite golfing attire, but we must admit – he scrubs up well with a haircut and a shave.
