It has been five years since the 37-year-old won one of golf's major championships, and Woods will be desperate to move one step closer to Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 major championships.
Despite four wins on the PGA Tour already this season, Woods has lost something of the aura that saw him claim his haul of major titles in an 11-year spell of dominance
Of the first 14 majors that he led or had a share of the lead going into the final round, Woods won all of them.
However, this invincible reputation was quashed during the 2009 USPGA Championship at Hazeltine, when he shot a four-over-par round of 75 to allow YE Yang to take the Wannamaker Trophy.
Since then he has only once held a share of the lead at the end of the day in a major championship, tying atop of the leaderboard with Vijay Singh and Carl Pettersson after two rounds of the USPGA at Kiawah Island last year.
It is also worth noting that Woods has never won a major from behind, a fact that critics of Woods' quest to capture Nicklaus' crown are happy to point out.
Merion is one of the shortest major championship courses in recent years, and with damp conditions predicted over the next week it could play into the hands of a shorter, more accurate hitter.
Yet should Tiger be spotted pulling on his red golf shirt in the lead on Sunday, then it would take a brave person to bet against him.
