Royal Troon Golf Club in South Ayrshire, Scotland, currently only allows men to be members but it has announced it is to hold a full review of that policy.

It comes after arguably the most famous golf club in the world, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, ended its all-male membership policy after 260 years last September.

Royal Troon is scheduled to host the Open for the ninth time next year. The tournament was last played there in 2004, when US player Todd Hamilton, pictured here wearing a golf hat , was the champion.

The club captain, Bob Martin, says the club will be joined by the Ladies Golf Club, Troon, in hosting the 145th Open Championship in 2016 and there will be a joint championship committee.

Two other clubs on the Open rota, Muirfield and Royal St George's, also currently have all-male membership policies.
