The course will be named after his Scottish mother, Mary MacLeod, and will be placed next to his Championship links on the Menie Estate.

Architect Dr Martin Hawtree, who also designed Trump's first course and the world-famous Royal Birkdale, was praised by the American billionaire and golf fans are likely to be keen to pull on their golf clothing and get around the new course.

Trump said: "Once again Martin Hawtree's design in genius. We have the greatest piece of links land in the world. The unprecedented demand to play our championship course has accelerated our plans to build the second course."

Designer Dr Hawtree said: "The special challenge for me is to ensure that it sits comfortably beside its majestic neighbour, neither outshone by the existing course nor making any attempt to mimic or rival those leviathan qualities."

Although Trump and Dr Hawtree are pleased, some local residents oppose planning as it will surround many homes.

The final layout will be finalised and passed onto Aberdeenshire Council in April when Trump returns to Scotland. This course will differ from his first as it will lie outside a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
