The Open is now the only major not to have been won by a German golfer, Kaymer having donned his stylish golf clothing to take the US PGA Championship in 2010 following countryman Bernhard Langer's US Masters victories in 1985 and 1993.

Having shot a nine-under-par total of 271 to finish eight shots ahead of second-placed Rickie Fowler and Erik Compton at the US Open at Pinehurst, Kaymer said it is now only the Open - due to be held this year at Hoylake - missing from Germany's golfing trophy cabinet.

He said he is sure his country would be proud of his achievement, adding that he hoped his friend, mentor and golfing legend Langer would be too.

Kaymer's 271 was the second lowest ever in the US Open with the 130 he shot for the first two rounds giving him the lowest ever halfway total for the tournament.

The six-shot lead he took into the final two rounds, meanwhile, matched a record shared by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

Only a few weeks ago Kaymer's world ranking was outside the top 60 but his win at Pinehurst has now propelled him up to 11th place.
