Pete Bevacqua, the PGA's chief executive, revealed this week that the organisation is looking into the possibility of hosting the event in various locations across the globe.
"When we sat down to map our strategic plan to service our members and grow the game the question arose as to what impact it would have to take the USPGA Championship to an international location once or twice a decade," Bevacqua told Golf Digest.
"We need to push ourselves to think outside the box. What I have said internally is, 'Shame on us if we don't consider it and go through the exercise'."
Currently, the only major which the US does not host is The Open. Players pull their golf clothing on in Augusta for The Masters while the US Open is the national Championship.
If the USPGA Championship were to move abroad, it would need a number of groups to cooperate; however, it is doubtful that any players would object.
It is thought the earliest possible date the change could come into effect is 2020.
