The 38-year-old American, who was a no-show at the event in Texas due to an ongoing back problem, was leapfrogged by Adam Scott despite the fact that he also missed the tournament last week.

Brendon Todd secured his first PGA Tour win with victory at the Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas course, yet Scott managed to dethrone Woods without even playing a shot due to the way the rankings are worked out.

Woods, who hopes to pull on his golf clothing to compete later this summer, has spent a total of 683 weeks as the world's best during his glittering career to date.

He first took top spot back in June 1997. This followed his record-breaking performance in the US Masters two months before when he blew away the field with some wonderful strokes to win by 12 shots.

His longest time as world number one was a massive 281 weeks between June 2005 and October 2010.

Woods was most recently top of the pile for 60 weeks. Scott had previously spent 38 weeks in second spot.
