Practice Makes Perfect for Ryall and Sherborne

A trip to Saunton yesterday, Wednesday 12 April, paid handsome dividends for former European Tour players George Ryall and Andrew Sherborne as they led the West Region qualifiers into the final of the Glenmuir Club Professional Championship.

Ryall, based at The Players Club near Bristol, returned a magnificent seven under par 64 around the tough links and his nearest challenger on the day was Kendleshire's Sherborne, who also played some superb golf in his 66.

The pair, along with the 15 other qualifiers from the West Region, now go forward to the 72 hole finals at Prince's, Kent, from 13 - 16 June where the winner will pocket £10,000 from the £78,000 prize fund, have the use of a top of the range Peugeot car for a year and virtually guarantee a place in next year's Great Britain and Ireland PGA Cup team to travel to the United States.

Ryall had two eagles in his amazing round, holing a nine iron from 135 yards on the third and then hitting a drive and three wood to the 15th before draining a 20 foot putt.

"The two eagles obviously helped a lot and my putting was key all day," said Ryall.

"Myself, Sherborne and John Morgan decided to come down here last week for a practice round to get familiar with the course again and it really paid off.

"I was six under after 11 and even though I three putted the next I didn't really mind. It was quite breezy but I can't complain about a score like that."

Sherborne was also indebted to his putter for taking route 66, holing a 20 footer at the first and then getting another birdie at the second in a flying start to his round.

A bogey at the third briefly halted his progress but three more birdies in the final four holes saw him come in with a 66 that probably would, on any other day, have been good enough to top the leader board.

"Actually I haven't been putting that well but the one at the first set the tone and I maintained my form on the greens all day," said Sherborne.

Host club pro Albert MacKenzie, out in the day's very first group, came in with a three under par 68 to book his ticket to the final and now he has the chance to make up for one of the biggest disappointments of his career.

Fifth in the final two years ago, MacKenzie missed the cut at Woodhall Spa last summer but then had to hang around to see if he had done enough to earn a place in the PGA Cup side for the matches at The K Club in Dublin.

In the end he had to play-off for the final place in the 10-man team but lost out to Andrew Baguley at the second extra hole.

"I'll be 45 in June but I still feel I can push for a place in the PGA Cup team," said MacKenzie. "This will be my 15th appearance in the final and the Glenmuir is such a great event it's a privilege to be going back again for another crack at it.

"My very first final was at Prince's in 1989 so maybe I've come full circle."

Andrew Norman, Chris Murphy and Robert Evans had to work overtime to earn their places, coming through a five-man play-off to ensure a spot in the final.
